Telia Carrier builds West Coast route to connect Bay Area and Hollywood

Telia Carrier has built a West Coast network to bring 100G services into the Bay Area metro markets in the US to meet the demands of its content and entertainment provider customers.

In partnership with Infinera, Telia Carrier – the newly re-branded global arm of TeliaSonera – is doubling its West Coast backbone with an additional Pacific Coast Highway route between San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.

The route is designed to connect the internet content providers of the Bay Area with the entertainment and media providers in Hollywood.

Telia Carrier claims that connectivity will be enhanced between the two major West coast media hubs by providing latency, diversity and redundancy between Silicon Valley and the Pacific cable landing points in Los Angeles. It is also said to clear an additional path for Asia-Pacific traffic entering and leaving the US.

“The West Coast is a critical network segment in the U.S. and we are adding an additional route to further enhance customer experience in the region. The Infinera TM-Series makes the economics of 100G work,” said Mattias Fridström, chief technology officer at Telia Carrier.

“This metro solution brings with it the benefits of an integrated, low-power and space-saving design. More and more of our customers are doing the math and working out that now is the time to invest in 100G. And thanks to Infinera, we are ready for them.”

Telia Carrier is presently utilising an end-to-end Infinera intelligent transport network – from long haul to metro. Its Infinera TM-Series is said to provide Telia Carrier’s metro network with a 100G packet-optical platform featuring multi-service capabilities.
