Former MegaFon CEO to relinquish role

Russian carrier MegaFon has announced that Sergei Soldatenkov is set to become CEO once again after the resignation of Ivan Tavrin, effective April 29 2016, was accepted by its board yesterday.

Tavrin is resigning to “focus on his current and new business projects as well as serving as a board member of USM Holdings”. The board also accepted the resignation of Soldatenkov as chairman of the board so he can to take up the position of acting CEO.

Soldatenkov served as CEO of the carrier from 2003 to April 2012 and, subject to official approval by shareholders at its upcoming AGM, is set to start serving a three-year term.

“I am honoured to be invited by the board of directors to become CEO of MegaFon,” said Soldatenkov.

“I’ve actually never left the company and now I am glad to be back to run day-to-day operations. While serving as the Board chairman I have acquired a better understanding of our strategic challenges and opportunities and how to grow shareholder value.”

Tavrin said in a statement yesterday: "After four fantastic years as CEO of MegaFon I have submitted my resignation to the board this morning…I am very proud of what we have achieved and remain absolutely confident that the company is in the best hands possible and is for future growth and will remain a leader in Russian telecom industry.”

MegaFon elected Ivan Streshinsky as its new chairman in the reshuffle, who credited Tavrin for his leadership and successfully managing the carrier’s IPO.

Prior to joining MegaFon, Soldatenkov held senior executive roles at United Company GROS, Petersburg Telephone Network, Telecominvest, Delta Telecom, Impex Group and also Russo-British venture ARS.

The news comes after MegaFon revealed to Capacity that it has made a series of major enhancements to its Diverse Route for European and Asian Markets (DREAM) project.
