Vodafone M-Pesa reaches 25 million users

Vodafone has announced that its M-Pesa mobile money transfer service has reached 25 million customers across its markets in Africa, Asia and Europe.

Presently available in 11 countries, the service’s user base increased by 27.1% in the year leading to March 31 which the operator attributed to its launches in Albania and Ghana.

“I am delighted and proud that M-Pesa has reached the 25 million active customers milestone," said Michael Joseph, director of mobile money at Vodafone, in a statement.

"M-Pesa continues to expand, evolving beyond traditional money transfers to encompass savings and loans, payments of salaries and benefits, settlement of utility bills and school fees and to enable vital health and agricultural solutions," he said.

The telco has signed global framework agreements with international money transfer hubs – TransferTo and MFS For Africa – in a move to strengthen its partnerships with other money transfer operators.

In addition, it has partnered with MTN Mobile Money to enable direct money transfers between M-Pesa and MTN customers in seven countries across East Africa.
