Telstra launches multi-cloud offering

Telstra has launched a cloud offering designed to connect to multiple clouds through its network.

The telco has also added Amazon Web Services (AWS) to the range of cloud services it is offering its customers.

Telstra’s Cloud Gateway service – available in June 2016 – is said to enable the telco’s customers in Australia to directly connect to Microsoft Azure, Office 365, VMWare vCloud Air while international customers can connect to AWS and IBM SoftLayer. More cloud services will be added over time.

Philip Jones, executive director of global products and solutions at Telstra, said Cloud Gateway, combined with Telstra’s range of cloud environment, is designed to help its customers improve agility, reduce costs and support innovation.

“Most organisations don’t realise the full value of cloud out of a single service. Instead, our customers are investing in sophisticated hybrid cloud environments, which come with their own range of fragmented networking challenges,” said Jones. Some of these these include managing multiple vendors, portals and contracts, while trying to maintain a high level of security, performance and operational efficiency.

“We believe that just because these solutions are sophisticated, doesn’t mean that they should also be complex. Cloud Gateway is Telstra’s simple way to connect multiple clouds, and create hybrid environments.”

Earlier in February, Telstra announced that it would be co-hosting a hybrid cloud innovation centre with AWS and Ericsson. In January, it acquired Melbourne-based cloud computing service provider Kloud and invested in Chinese cloud services company Qiniu.
