Reliance Jio announces 100Gbps BBG cable system launch

Reliance Jio has announced the launch of the 8,100km Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) cable system, with the cable's consortium claiming it’s the “first dark fibre system to be lit at 100Gbps”.

BBG uses high-speed fibre optic technology, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) which allows the capacity to be increased at will without any additional submarine intervention. It has an initial equipped capacity of 9Tb/s and design capacity of 55Tb/s.

“We are excited about the launch of BBG as it offers not just direct connectivity in and out of India through Chennai and Mumbai but also acts as a state-of-the-art 100Gbps extension of Jio’s 100Gbps core network,” said Mathew Oommen, Reliance Jio’s president.

“This global connectivity brings key international content hubs closer to our customers, delivering a much richer experience as an important part of driving India’s broadband adoption, enabling consumers to shift away from the current high-cost low value propositions.”

The BBG will provide low latency connectivity and help support bandwidth growth between the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and Southeast Asia. The cable lands in UAE, Oman, India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, with a terrestrial network from Malaysia to the Singapore points of presence (PoPs) at Equninix and Global Switch.

Reliance Jio owns and operates the strategically important undersea cable landing facility in Chennai, providing a high-speed, high-capacity, low latency route connecting India to the rest of the world.

In addition to Reliance Jio, the BBG consortium partners include: Dialog Axiata, Etisalat, Omantel, Telecom Malaysia, and Vodafone.

BBG will also be interconnected with existing cable systems helping the cable network to reach, Africa and Far East Asia.
