Vodafone Netherlands installs virtual VoLTE network

Vodafone has deployed the first cloud-based voice over LTE system plus and wifi calling in the Netherlands, in partnership with Ericsson.

The deployment is intended to all Vodafone Netherlands to provide a superior experience for users of mobile video communication services, comparable with that offered by over-the-top internet services.

Matthias Sauder, head of networks at Vodafone Netherlands, said: “Network virtualisation brings huge opportunities for efficiency and agility. It will allow us to introduce new services more rapidly to our subscribers.”

Wifi calling enables operator voice services to be provided in more locations, such as basements and other indoor environments, by complementing macro network coverage.

VoLTE offers fast call set-up times and high-definition voice quality while permitting a broader range of IP-based communication capabilities, such as video calling over LTE and multi-device support.

Valter D'Avino, Ericsson’s head of Western and Central Europe, said the system “provides Vodafone with a complete solution to evolve their voice and SMS business toward an all-IP communications network based in the cloud. This is a great example of how operators everywhere can leverage cloud and virtualization technologies to explore new business opportunities.”

The solution is based on a commercial deployment of network functions virtualisation. The complete cloud-based solution also includes virtual network functions for wifi calling, policy control and application server domain.
