MTN South Africa appoints CIO

The MTN group has appointed Benjamin Marais as its new South African CIO, effective 1 March 2016.

Marais joins MTN from Discovery Health, where he served in a similar role and will replace Neil Tomkinson, who is being positioned into a group level role.

Mteto Nyati, CEO of MTN South Africa, believes tapping into skills and organisations outside telecommunications, particularly those that have completed successful transformation programmes, is crucial and can help MTN introduce cutting-edge systems.

"Communication has grown to become increasingly complex and therefore it is critical that the systems we have in place meet the challenges of the modern-day era," Nyati said in a statement.

"It is pivotal that we take a proactive approach to integrating our systems, while ensuring that our processes are simplified and not burdensome for the end user."

The news comes after MTN secured two licences in West Africa for $235 million at the end of 2015.
