TIM Brasil to lay off up to 1,000 workers

Telecom Italia’s Brazil unit is cutting up to approximately 1,000 workers as it seeks to restructure its operations.

Tim Participacoes is expected to discuss the reorganisation on February 15 during the review of its 2015 financial figures and business plan. The unit is also said to consider partially outsourcing its call centres.

"They are in fact doing a restructuring and our estimate is a cut of 800 to 1,000 in various areas, technical, administrative, all areas," Luis Antonio Souza, president of SinttelRio and general secretary of Fenattel, a national telecommunications union federation, told Reuters.

Tim Participacoes has sought to implement an efficiency plan designed to save 1 billion reais ($252 million) by the end of 2017. “It is being carried out with great discipline with the goal of create an improving outlook for operations and for the investment capacity of the company,” said the unit who has 13,600 workers.

The unit has been rumoured to be in talks with Oi over a potential merger which would have a market share of approximately 44% in Brazil.
