O3b signs agreement in Papua New Guinea

O3b Networks has signed an agreement with Papua New Guinea-based network and satellite operator SpeedCast.

The deal will see O3b provide connectivity in and around the city of Lae, enabling the provision of low latency broadband services for enterprise and consumer customers. SpeedCast will provide access between the core network and global internet backbone.

It will mark the second O3b terminal deployed by the SpeedCast Group in Papua New Guinea, and the sixth overall.

“Extending the reach of this low latency international connectivity via the wireless network around Lae, we expect the business community will find a significant improvement over the satellite connectivity they’re accustomed to,” said Pierre-Jean Beylier, CEO at SpeedCast.

In December, O3b closed $460 million in incremental financing to expand its constellation from 12 to 20 satellites in order to meet growing demand for higher throughput and high performance connectivity.

"O3b Networks provides the only solution that can meet the needs for business customers in locations like Papua New Guinea, and we rely on companies like SpeedCast to rollout the O3b solution with flawless implementation, operations and support,” said Imran Malik, VP Asia for O3b Networks.
