TWC says data breach may affect 320,000 customers

Time Warner Cable (TWC) told reporters on Wednesday that the email addresses and passwords of up to 320,000 customers may have been stolen during a data infringement.

The company has not yet determined how the information was obtained, but in an email to local reporters, Scott Pryzwansky, a TWC spokesperson, said there were no signs that its own systems were breached.

TWC believes that the information was either gathered through malware downloaded during phishing attacks, or indirectly via data breaches of other companies that stored TWC customer information.

According to Reuters, TWC is now encouraging customers to update their email passwords as a precaution.

Earlier this month, the FCC again pushed back its deadline to review TWC’s acquisition by Charter Communications.
