America Movil and AT&T eye Mexican spectrum

Carlos Slim’s America Movil and US giant AT&T are eyeing an auction of 80MHz of mobile spectrum in Mexico, Reuters reports.

The two companies allegedly revealed their interest to the country’s Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) last Friday, and they will need to file official documents of interest ahead of the auction on February 15, 2016.

In October this year, AT&T rolled out its first LTE network in Mexico, in six locations.

The IFT has been attempting to curb America Movil’s 70% dominance in both the fixed and mobile markets in Mexico, and in July last year, Slim revealed plans to reduce the company’s presence in the country.
