Ooredoo Maldives and Huawei Marine partner for subsea cable

Ooredoo Maldives and Huawei Marine have today revealed a partnership for the construction of a nationwide fibre-optic subsea cable in the Maldives, in a bid to connect the country to a digital future.

The 1,200km National Submarine Cable Project will utilise Huawei Marine’s 100G technology, and is designed to support the Maldives’ broadband policy by providing the country with advanced ICT infrastructure.

“As the internet continues to bring remarkable value to individuals, families and businesses around the world, we firmly believe that it is the right of each and every individual to be connected to the abundant benefits of the internet,” said Vikram Sinha, CEO of Ooredoo Maldives.

“With this is mind, we are proud to take this revolutionary step that will enable us to connect our communities to a fast and reliable broadband internet and support their digital lifestyles from wherever they are in the Maldives.”

The cable will come with enhanced network capacity for the delivery of high-bandwidth services, and is expected to provide Ooredoo with resilient infrastructure to meet the country’s growing demands.

“The government has a strong vision of making the Maldives one of the most digitally advanced countries in the region,” said Umar Naseer, Minister of Home Affairs for the Maldives, at the launch of the National Submarine Cable Project.

“Ooredoo’s National Submarine Cable will greatly contribute towards the delivery of this vision and we thank Ooredoo for their support in bringing the benefits of digital to all our people.”

In September this year, Ooredoo launched its Smart City initiative in the Maldives, designed to deliver smart solutions to business and consumers in the region.
