Alcatel-Lucent to deploy routers for Chinese operators

Alcatel-Lucent is to deploy its 7950 XRS IP core router for China Unicom and China Mobile to meet traffic demand in the country.

China Mobile is installing the core router into its national IP backbone while China Unicom will expand into the metro networks of nine cities within the Jiangsu, Shandong, Jiangxi, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia provinces.

Of its deal with China Mobile, Yuan Xin, chairman and CEO of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, said: “This contract continues our strategic collaboration with China Mobile in the IP domain. Leveraging the XRS core technology in its IP backbone network will enable China Mobile to meet the evolving demands of its rapidly growing subscriber base. The application of our IP edge portfolio will strengthen both China Mobile’s backhaul capabilities and drive new capacity in the metro networks to meet the next decade of demand.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 XRS IP core router is said to provide both operators with a flexible, scalable, high-capacity and intelligent network with a simplified structure. Both deployments will be completed towards the end of 2016.

The vendor's agreement with China Unicom will enable the operator to meet upcoming customer demand as it seeks to expand its cloud services.

“We are proud our IP core routing technology plays an increasingly important role in helping China Unicom build out its next generation core network to meet this demand,” said Yuan.
