Alcatel-Lucent pens duo of data deals in China

Alcatel-Lucent has agreed to help China Unicom and China Mobile with the management of their data traffic as demand increases exponentially across the country.

The French vendor will expand the deployment of its 7950 XRS IP core router for China Unicom as the operator looks to meet high traffic demands in nine Chinese cities.

Metro networks in these densely populated cities are experiencing significant increases in internet data centre traffic as more consumers and businesses demand high-bandwidth cloud-based video services.

“China is one of the world’s telecommunications markets and demand for broadband is exploding, particularly in high-traffic metro networks,” said Yuan Xin, chairman and CEO of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell.

“We are proud our IP core routing technology plays an increasingly important role in helping China Unicom build out its next generation core network to meet this demand.”

Alcatel-Lucent will also deploy its 7950 XRS IP core router in China Mobile’s national IP backbone network, CMNET, to enable the operator to meet growing demands from its subscriber base for high-speed data services.

China Mobile expects capacity on its network to hit 180 terabits by 2017 and 500 terabits by 2020, and the company is consequently looking to simplify its network structure and optimise costs.

“This contract continues our strategic collaboration with China Mobile in the IP domain. Leveraging the XRS core technology in its IP backbone network will enable China Mobile to meet the evolving demands of its rapidly growing subscriber base,” Xin said.

“The application of our IP edge portfolio will strengthen both China Mobile’s backhaul capabilities and drive new capacity in the metro networks to meet the next decade of demand.”
