Orange steps up IoT strategy

Orange will roll out its Internet of Things (IoT) network in 17 French cities in the first quarter of 2016.

Part of its IoT strategy announced in September, the network will leverage Long Range (LoRa) technology. It will be initially launched in Angers, Avignon, Bordeaux, Douai and Lens, Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Nice, Paris, Rennes, Rouen, Toulon, Toulouse and Strasbourg.

At the same time, Orange has begun work on standardising its 2G and 4G networks for IoT, which is scheduled to be operational in 2017.

By the end of the year Orange and Ericsson will perform the first usage trial of 2G and 4G networks. The technical tests will focus primarily on coverage in difficult areas such as basements and on sensor life.

Orange has also extended its IoT service portfolio, Datavenue, launching a solution for connected objects called Live Objects and a data analysis solution called Flexible Data.

The developments will help Orange meet its ambitious target of driving 600 million euros in revenues from IoT by 2016. Part of its Essentials2020 strategic plan, the French operator is aiming to establish a presence across the entire value chain, from connectivity solutions through to value added services.
