Orange Romania selects Alcatel-Lucent for network upgrade

Orange Romania has chosen Alcatel-Lucent to modernise and upgrade its long-haul microwave transport network in the country.

Orange Romania launched its 4G service in 2012 in the capital of Bucharest and this week’s agreement will allegedly see the French vendor enhance Orange’s 4G network capacity and performance as it further expands its broadband services.

“We are committed to evolving our network to provide the highest capacity and quality to our customers as we expand our service offer,” said Ionut Dobrescu, head of infrastructure expansion at Orange Romania.

“Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise in microwave transport is helping us to meet our commitments.”

The operator’s 4G network covers 70% of the population with speeds of 300Mbps available in six major cities – Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Galati, Iasi and Timisoara – but Orange is now noting a dramatic increase in demand for data services.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 9500 Microwave Packet Radio technology across Romania, replacing its existing links, and will also deliver its 5620 Service Aware Manager.

“By deploying our market leading 9500 Microwave transport technology we can help service providers like Orange Romania deliver ultra-broadband services everywhere,” said Sergiu Secareanu, key account manager for Orange Romania at Alcatel-Lucent.

“Our work with this customer reinforces our strategy for deploying microwave technology to meet long-haul transport requirements for packet data.”
