DoCoMo and Ericsson join forces for 5G

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo is trying out Ericsson’s 5G radio test bed, in advance of other operators which are expected to start field trials in 2016.

The trials will allow operators to conduct live field trials of radio technologies that are being studied for 5G services, which are expected to enter commercial operation in 2020.

Seizo Onoe, EVP and CTO of NTT DoCoMo, said the company wants to try out different use cases of 5G at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020.

"We are pleased to take the next step toward testing in realistic network environment. We expect that this would lead to even further opportunities," Onoe said.

"Ericsson’s 5G radio prototypes will help us to gain insights into the potential for 5G in our network environment and market, to open up new possibility to enable new services for our customers and partners."

Arun Bansal, senior vice president and head of the radio business unit at Ericsson, added: "These new 5G radio prototypes are the size of a carry-on and weigh less than 20 kilograms."
