Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade Tanzania Telecom network

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a three-year framework agreement with the Tanzania Telecommunications Company (TTCL) to modernise its IP/MPLS and optical transport networks.

The project will enable the operator to meet the demands of its fixed and mobile access customers ahead of the launch of its 4G LTE services.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its IP routing and 100G agile optical networking (AON) DWDM technology, converging fixed and mobile access on to one network.

“Working with Alcatel-Lucent and leveraging its state of the art IP and optical transport technology as well as expertise, we can enable new network efficiencies that will allow us to both meet the growing demands of our customers and help contribute to the development of ICT in Tanzania,” said Kamugisha Kazaura, CEO of TTCL.

Phase One of the deployment, which is scheduled to be completed in December 2015, will cover major cities including Dodoma, the country’s capital, and the financial centre of Dar Es Salaam.

Mobile penetration in the country is presently at 75%, according to Alcatel-Lucent, and is expected to grow by 20% each year. Demand for data services has been fuelled by the entry of several service providers, as well as the expansion in undersea cable connectivity.
