Senegal launches tender for 4G mobile licence

Senegalese regulators have opened a tender for a 4G mobile licence in the country, Reuters reports.

Adbou Karim Sall, general manager for telecoms regulator, ARTP, allegedly said: “Senegal has decided on Monday November 16 to launch the bid for the 4G licence.”

No comment has been made on the value of the contract or timescale of the process.

France’s Orange is the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, followed by Millicom’s Tigo, and local player Expresso Telecom.

The mobile market in Senegal is a prospering one, helped in part by poor fixed-line infrastructure in some rural areas, and mobile penetration hit 111% in early 2015.

In February 2013, the Orange’s Africa Coast Europe (ACE) submarine cable landed in Dakar, Senegal.
