China Telecom interested in Serbia bid

The Serbian government has confirmed that China Telecom is one of the bidders for a 58% stake in Telekom Srbija.

Tatjana Matic, state secretary in the ministry for trade, tourism and telecommunications, told news agency Tanjug that China Telecom executives met government officials.

"In this phase they appear as an interested party," Matic said, according to Tanjug, on the day the Serbian government announced plans to close the agency.

Serbia has tried to sell Telekom Srbija a number of times over the past few years. In 2011 it rejected a €1.1 billion bid from Telekom Austria for 51% as it was too low.

US investment fund Apollo is believed to have offered €1.2 billion for the 58% now on sale, according to reports in October.

Other bidders are believed to include, according to reports, Advent International, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Colbeck Capital Management, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Mid Europa Partners and Slovenia’s Telekom Slovenije.
