UK’s TalkTalk site hit by hackers

Hackers have hit the website of UK telecoms operator TalkTalk, and the company has warned that all its four million customers’ personal and bank data could be at risk.

It is believed that the company was subjected to a distributed denial of service attack.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but a message posted on Twitter claimed to be from “a cyber-jihadi group” but also said it was based in “Soviet Russia” - more than 25 years after the end of Soviet rule in Russia.

TalkTalk’s CEO, Dido Harding, told the BBC: “It’s too early to know exactly what data has been attacked and what has been stolen. Potentially it could affect all of our customers, which is why we are contacting them all by email and we will also write to them as well.”

However, TalkTalk took its web-based email service down as soon as it learned of the attack, so it was not immediately clear how it would contact them. One TalkTalk customer said: “Not able to send or receive email over the last couple of days. Unfortunately TalkTalk account holder.”

TalkTalk’s own webmail portal said: “We’re working hard to improve and repair issues relating to your email services. Here you can find updates and more information about the email service. We apologise if you are affected by any of these issues.”
