AT&T switches on LTE in Mexico

US giant AT&T has revealed its first roll-out of a 4G LTE network in Mexico, in six locations across the country.

The cities of Atlacomulco, Cuernavaca, Cuautla, Pachuca, Tepeji and Tulancingo are now all expected to reap the benefits of AT&T’s 4G services.

The operator has said the deployment will be a gradual one, with coverage expected to reach 40 million people by the end of the year, 75 million by the end of 2016 and an estimated 100 million people by the end of 2018.

“The mobile internet in the US created an engine of economic growth, and we believe it will do the same here in Mexico,” said Thaddeus Arroyo, CEO at AT&T Mexico.

“This next-generation, high-speed mobile network empowers consumers and businesses to reach a new potential as they explore, discover and try new things.”

AT&T has invested heavily in Mexico this year, having acquired Iusacell and Nextel Mexico in January.
