Dish urges FCC to reject merger between Time Warner and Charter

Dish Networks has filed a petition with US regulator the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting that it deny the proposed merger of Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications.

The petition said that the merger would cause substantial harm to competitors and “would be no better for the public interest” than the previously proposed deal between Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

The Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger was abandoned following rigorous regulatory resistance, with Dish joining companies like Netflix to oppose the deal.

Dish has claimed that a merger between Charter and Time Warner would create two broadband providers – the other being Comcast – with combined control of 90% of US broadband networks.

Dish offers a video streaming service, SlingTV, and quoted SlingTV CEO Roger Lynch as saying that the merger would harm emerging competitive online video products and services, as well as affect the performance of traditional satellite TV services.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) also filed a petition against the deal earlier this week.
