Liquid Telecom set for IPO next year

Liquid Telecom is expected to launch a European initial public offering next year after turning down several offers in recent months.

Strive Masiyiwa, founder of Econet Group which owns UK-based Liquid Telecom, said the company will look at a listing in 2016.

“We have received several unsolicited offers for Liquid, but we want it to remain an independent access provider for internet in Africa. We are going to raise more capital in market and strengthen its market leadership in this vital space,” said Masiyiwa.

He added that Econet Group had already appointed advisors for the potential listing of Liquid at one of the major European exchanges. "We are looking at one of the European exchanges and we will finalise that early in the new year," he added.

Liquid Telecom presently operates an 18,000km fibre broadband network spanning 15 African countries. Its customers include Orange, Tigo, Vidafone, MTN and Airtel Africa.

Last month, the operator entered into a partnership with MTN to enable both companies to access the fixed and mobile African networks of the other.
