Equinix to provide backhaul for FASTER subsea cable

Equinix is to support the FASTER subsea cable by providing backhaul into its data centres.

The cable will be backhauled in to the company’s four international business exchange data centres on the West Coast of the US, including Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Seattle, to Chikura and Shima in Japan.

"Equinix remains committed to accelerating business performance by connecting companies to their customers, employees and partners inside the world's most interconnected data centres," said Jim Poole, vice president of global service providers at Equinix. "We believe that the FASTER cable system will increase the opportunity for interconnection between North America and Asia and we are excited to be supporting this new venture."

The FASTER cable – reportedly one of the longest routes and largest design capacity to be built on the trans-Pacific route – is said to feature a six-fibre-pair cable and optical transmission technologies with an initial design capacity of 60Tb/s.

According to Equinix, it will provide connectivity to neighbouring cable systems to extend the capacity beyond Japan to other Asian locations.

The FASTER consortium is comprised of six companies, including China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, Google, KDDI and Singtel. It is expected to begin operating in the second quarter of 2016.
