Cell C launches LTE network

South Africa’s Cell C has launched its LTE network in Gauteng and Durban, with plans to have 200 LTE-enabled sites live by the end of the year.

Cell C, South Africa’s third largest mobile player, is the country’s last major operator to launch an LTE network, and it has invested $670 million (R8 billion) in the network’s roll-out over the next three years.

An alleged 400,000 subscribers have now been provisioned for the service and can expect downlink speeds of 30Mbps.

4,000 base transceiver stations are due to be in place by 2017 and the operator is planning to launch a Wifi calling service on October 1.

“Whether you are in a basement or find yourself in an area with no cellular coverage, Wifi access will allow you to receive a full mobile experience including voice, USSD (unstructured supplementary service data) self-service and SMS,” Jose Dos Santos, Cell C CEO, told reporters.
