The MoU will run until 2020 and will see Swish vendor Ericsson and South Korea’s LG Uplus develop four key areas: IoT infrastructure, SDN and NFV, global CDNs and IoT-advanced technologies.
“We will prepare for the 5G era based on a combination of our network management know-how and Ericsson's strong technological power,” said Kim Suntae, CTO at LG Uplus.
“The two companies will lead network evolution by introducing advanced network technologies to domestic and overseas markets through close collaboration.”
The pair will establish technology and frequency strategies in preparation for long-term network advancement, and their work will include research, testing and the development of technology and equipment.
“By enabling essentially unlimited access to information anywhere and anytime, 5G can deliver enormous benefits to people, business and society,” said Ulf Ewaldsson, CTO at Ericsson.
“Realising this transformative vision requires a strong industry ecosystem, and we are delighted to partner with LG Uplus to lead the development of both 5G and IoT platforms.”
Ericsson has also been working closely with South Korea’s KT, having signed an MoU with the operator for 5G in March, as well as extending its collaboration on IoT later in June this year.
In March this year, LG Uplus revealed that it was working with Affirmed Networks on NFV technology.
