GBI partners with Ciena for optical networking

Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has partnered with Ciena for the deployment of the vendor’s converged packet-optical networking solutions.

Ciena’s solutions are expected to advance GBI’s portfolio of enterprise and wholesale Ethernet services as well as enable increased network flexibility and scalability, in a bid to support the growing demand for connectivity in the Middle East.

“We have recognised that the ever-increasing bandwidth usage in the region has created a demand for customised services and greater network upgrades,” said Abdulla Al Rwaili executive vice chairman and managing director at GBI.

“The investments in greater network intelligence will help us deliver on the current and future needs of our customers and partners.”

As well as adding greater intelligence to GBI’s network, Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical platform is designed to improve ease of operations, maintenance and future capacity expansions, including an option to perform future upgrades.

“With Ciena's solutions underpinning GBI's submarine and terrestrial cables, GBI will have a fully optimised end-to-end network,” said Ed McCormack, VP and general manager of submarine systems at Ciena.

“This massive capacity enhancement also means that GBI is well positioned to accommodate growth and help its customers facilitate the demand for high-bandwidth applications, such as those needed for video and cloud services.”
