Poland to halt mobile auction in October?

Poland may end its auction of mobile broadband frequencies in October, following a change in ruling from Polish authorities, Reuters reports.

Poland’s ministry of administration and digitisation has allegedly said it will change its rules for the auction of mobile frequencies, which would enable the telecoms market regulator to end an auction after 115 days.

Presently, mobile auctions have no time limit and regulators are unable to stop them, but new regulation would mean regulators can step in if the auction has not been settled within this 115-day time frame.

The country’s auction of 4G mobile frequencies was launched approximately six months ago, following a cancellation in 2014, and was expected to raise $425 million. 100 days in and bids are now said to stand at $1.7 billion.

The proposed changes are subject to a seven day consultation which started on Tuesday of this week.
