Ooredoo launches Smart City in the Maldives

Ooredoo has launched its Smart City initiative in the Maldives, designed to deliver smart solutions to businesses and consumers in the region.

The Qatari operator has launched Wifi hangout areas in prime locations in the capital of Malé, and will continue to roll out this service across the country in a bid to provide fast, secure and affordable internet connectivity from any location.

“We are committed towards connecting the Maldives and its people to a smarter future,” said Vikram Sinha, CEO at Ooredoo Maldives at the launch event in Malé this week.

“The smart cities concept is synonymous with our belief that we can leverage technology to stimulate human growth across our footprint.”

During the launch event, Ooredoo also demonstrated the opportunities for growth and cost efficiency with the incorporation of internet-of-things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) services.

Smart city services are due to be available from the end of September this year.

“Globally, Ooredoo is contributing to the development and implementation of smart city solutions and networks, supported by our role as a lead partner in the Smart Cities Council,” said Khalid Al Mahmoud, chairman of the board at Ooredoo Maldives and group chief officer of small and medium business unit.

“We believe in the power of emerging smart city technologies to enrich people’s lives, and we are eager to offer our expertise to the people of the Maldives in their efforts to build next generation urban environments.”
