CAT Telecom pulls out of Thailand’s 4G auction

Thailand’s CAT Telecom has decided it will no longer participate in the country’s 4G spectrum auction having failed to secure a foreign partner, according to local reports.

CAT had been in talks with Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and South Korea’s SK Telecom, but negotiations allegedly broke down following uncertainties, Sanpachai Huvanandana, acting president of CAT, told reporters.

The state-owned operator was also said to be deterred by having to disclose its budget and obtain cabinet approval prior to the auction.

“This is impractical as other bidders would know our maximum bid,” Huvanandana said. “It’s barring us from competing in an auction.”

Thailand’s 4G auction has been hit by numerous delays but is now set to be held at the end of the year.

AIS, True Move, dtac and state-owned TOT will participate in the auction, alongside newcomer Jasmine International.
