Vodafone and Hutchison to buy spectrum from Qualcomm

Vodafone and Hutchison 3G UK (H3G) have agreed to purchase UK spectrum from chipmaker Qualcomm in a deal estimated to be as much as £200 million.

The operators will be buying 20MHz of spectrum each from Qualcomm UK Spectrum, following the company’s announcement in June 2015 that it was planning to sell its L-Band spectrum

Qualcomm bought the L-band spectrum -- 1452-1492 megahertz -- at the 2008 auction for £8.3 million. The deals are expected to help the operators meet increasing demand for mobile data. Hutchison owns Three UK.

“Harmonised and mandated for mobile broadband by the European Union in May 2015, L-Band spectrum can be used for supplemental downlink (SDL), helping mobile network operators to meet the global demand for increased mobile data traffic,” said Qualcomm.

The two companies will submit their applications to transfer the spectrum to UK regulator Ofcom.
