Telefonica and Alcatel-Lucent upgrade PENCAN subsea routes

Telefonica and Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) have joined forces to upgrade the PENCAN-7 and PENCAN-8 subsea cable routes between mainland Spain (the peninsula) and the Canary Islands.

Both 1,400km in length, PENCAN-7 connects Chipiona, Spain to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, while PENCAN-8 links Conil, Spain to Candelaria, Tenerife.

Telefonica and Alcatel-Lucent plan to upgrade these routes with 100G technology, in a bid to address the growing demand for broadband services and connectivity.

“PENCAN submarine cable systems have a proven track record of operational excellence based on optimum network performance and further scalability via seamless upgrades,” said Maria Jesus Almazor, regional director for Southern Spain at Telefonica.

“The additional capacity available with ASN’s advanced technology will contribute significantly in meeting the ongoing demand in the markets served by these systems.”

The cables are part of Telefonica’s larger PENCAN network, which also includes the PENCAN-6 and PENCAN-9, and is designed to ensure robust connectivity between the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain.

“ASN’s unique submarine technology provides operators like Telefónica an easy upgrade path and scalability to multi-terabit capacity, with staged migration combining technological and economic benefits,” said Philippe Dumont, president of ASN.

“This allows quicker service turn-up to meet the end-user’s expectations for anywhere, anytime ultra-broadband access to applications, storage and computing.”

Earlier this month, Alcatel-Lucent completed commissioning of the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS).
