America Movil eyes European telcos

America Movil is interested in acquiring European telcos, according to its company’s CFO Carlos Garcia Moreno.

The operator bought approximately 60% of Telekom Austria in 2014 in a move to further expand in central and eastern Europe.

Garcia said the company sees opportunities for investment in the region’s fixed-line market. "In Eastern Europe you need to build a lot more, develop the fixed platform much more for the new phase of growth in mobile data services," Garcia Moreno told Reuters. "In this process there are acquisitions that can be made."

He added that America Movil’s revenue in Europe could amount to as much as 15% by 2020. The region presently accounts for approximately 7% of the company’s revenue.

Garcia Moreno declined to say if the operator was interested in acquiring Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile.

America Movil - through its subsidiary Telekom Austria - acquired blizoo in July 2015, one of the largest cable providers in Macedonia and Bulgaria.
