China Mobile selects Huawei for VoLTE project

China Mobile has awarded Huawei the largest share of its VoLTE project, which includes network convergence building and reconstruction across 31 provinces in China.

In March this year, the two companies completed a successful VoLTE demonstration, and according to preliminary results of the overall bidding process, Huawei will again be China Mobile’s key strategic partner, capturing almost half of the VoLTE project share.

China Mobile intends to deliver services to 50 million commercial VoLTE subscribers by the beginning of 2016.

A large part of this project will be the evolution of fixed IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) networks to fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) networks across 14 of China’s provinces.

Huawei will conduct FMC transformation for 12 of these provinces including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

Late last month, Vodafone and Huawei claimed to have launched the world’s first cloud-based VoLTE commercial network in Italy
