SK Telecom and Ericsson to collaborate on 5G network slicing

SK Telecom and Ericsson have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on key technologies for 5G network, including network slicing.

Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will develop and deploy network slicing technology optimised for 5G services.

“Virtual network architecture, including network slicing, is critical to supporting new services in the era of 5G,” says Alex Jinsung Choi, CTO at SK Telecom. “We will build an optimal network for a wide array of services from the overall end-to-end standpoint, and pioneer the evolution of innovative networks.”

The companies will also continue their existing partnership to build a joint 5G test bed designed to provide end-to-end 5G pilot services.

SK Telecom said the network slicing technology provides a strong competitive edge as it significantly enhances the network’s operational efficiency and reduces the time required to deploy services over its 5G network.

As part of the collaboration, the two companies will build what they say is the world’s first hyperscale data centre system which guarantees high performance and reliability for IT and virtualised telecoms services.
