Proximus to deploy LoRa network

Belgium’s Proximus is to begin the roll-out of a mobile network based on the so-called LoRa technology for the internet of things (IoT).

LoRa – which stands for Long Range – is a technology that has been developed to enable machine-to-machine (M2M) services that require little bandwidth, using very low power levels.

Proximus – owned by Belgacom – claims it will be the first operator in Belgium to use the technology and aims to deploy the network in Belgium and Luxembourg.

“The unique thing about this technology is that, besides working over long distances, energy consumption is very low, which means that the devices can operate autonomously for years on end,” said Proximus.

“The LoRa network rounds out Proximus’ machine-to-machine offering over its fixed and mobile network. The possibilities are endless. Proximus is already testing very specific applications.”

The LoRa network will be available in Belgium’s main cities by the end of 2015, and all of Belgium and Luxembourg a year later.

Proximus has been part of the LoRa Alliance since January 2015. The alliance aims to develop an international standard for low power wide area networks to ensure interoperability.

In 2014 the operator was the first to launch its LTE network in the country's capital Brussels.
