Totalplay may take part in Mexico's network tender

Mexican operator Totalplay may participate in an upcoming tender for a $7 billion wholesale mobile network in Mexico, according to its CEO.

While the operator is relatively small, with 200,000 residential subscribers in Mexico and 50,000 business and government clients, CEO Eduardo Kuri told Reuters that the company could be involved in building the network.

Kuri added that the company wants to understand the project further before deciding whether to participate.

The planned network, which was written into the country’s constitution in 2013, is designed to inject competition into the mobile market which has been dominated by America Movil.

The government reportedly plans to sell capacity to operators such as Telefonica and AT&T. In May 2015 the country reduced the cost of the proposed tender from $10 billion to $7 billion. The highest bidder will be required to build and operate a wholesale network using a 90MHz block in the  700MHz spectrum.
