Cisco moves further into security with OpenDNS acquisition

Cisco looks set to acquire cloud-based security firm OpenDNS for $635 million as it aims to enhance its security offering.

OpenDNS offers a predicative security solution that is said to anticipate and prevent malicious activity before it threatens networks. Formed in 2006, the company initially provided a network of domain servers to help route web traffic, which companies used to reach websites quicker.

It has since moved further into security services and Cisco believes the acquisition will help offer its customers full threat protection - before, during and after an attack.

It continues Cisco’s heightened focus on security, having acquired cybersecurity firm Sourcefire for $2.7 billion in 2013 and malware and threat intelligence company ThreatGrid in May 2014.

"As more people, processes, data and things become connected, opportunities for security breaches and malicious threats grow exponentially when away from secure enterprise networks," said Hilton Romanski, Cisco chief technology and strategy officer.

"OpenDNS has a strong team with deep security expertise and key technology that complements Cisco's security vision. Together, we will help customers protect their extended network wherever the user is and regardless of the device."

The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of fiscal year 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

The OpenDNS team will join the Cisco Security Business Group organisation led by SVP and GM David Goeckeler.
