Virgin Media to begin £3 billion cable expansion

Virgin Media will begin the roll-out of its cable network this week, in what it says is the single largest investment in broadband digital infrastructure in the UK in over a decade.

The cable operator is extending its network to Manchester this week, the first city in the UK to benefit from its £3 billion high-speed broadband rollout unveiled earlier this year.

The operator will invest £75 million on connecting an additional 150,000 premises in the city, bringing its total coverage to 450,000 premises.

It is to begin work to connect the first 20,000 homes and businesses to speeds of 152Mb, which it claims is twice the fastest speeds available from rivals BT, TalkTalk and Sky.

The project in Manchester is expected to create approximately 500 jobs, says Virgin Media, which is 100% owned by Liberty Global.

In February 2015, Virgin Media said it would invest £3 on extending it superfast broadband network to another 4 million homes and businesses by 2020. Presently, its network is available to about 12.6 million homes.
