Bharti Airtel and O3b Networks connect Timor-Leste

Bharti Airtel and O3b Networks have signed a multi-year strategic framework agreement to provide IP trunking services in Timor-Leste.

O3b will deliver its high-speed satellite services to Bharti Airtel, in a bid to help the operator cope with the growth of 2G services and the development of 3G in the Southeast Asian nation.

“Like the rest of our mobile operator customer base worldwide, Bharti prioritises innovation and refuses to compromise on the overall quality of experience for their customer base,” said John Finney, chief commercial officer at O3b Networks.

“This strategic agreement is a reflection of that commitment.”

Bharti Airtel has provided a geostationary satellite connection for Timor-Leste for many years, but end users are now demanding a performance on their mobile devices that the existing satellite cannot support.

O3b satellites sit in medium earth orbit – one quarter the distance and one quarter the latency of geostationary satellites – thus enabling the delivery of high-speed voice, data and video services for both fixed-line and mobile devices.
