Tiscali selects Alcatel-Lucent for 100G optical network

Italian telecoms company Tiscali has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a 100G terrestrial optical backbone network in Italy, and upgrade its existing submarine system.

Alcatel-Lucent will use both its Agile Optical Networking solution and its 1839 Photonic Service Switch platform to increase Tiscali’s data capacity and transmission speeds.

Tiscali expects this to help it meet growing demands from existing business and consumer customers for high-bandwidth, video and internet services.

“Tiscali has been significantly contributing to the development of the internet in Italy among citizens and companies,” said Andrea Podda, CTO at Tiscali.

“Today more than ever we pursue this goal, in order to ensure our residential and business customers the benefits of the most recent and advanced technologies, both in terms of cost and functionalities, to help speed up the digitisation process in Italy, and make it an effective cultural evolution.”

Alcatel-Lucent will also upgrade the Italian telco’s submarine cable link between Olbia, Sardinia and Civitavecchia on the Italian peninsula, as well as the connection between Cagliari, Sardinia and Mazara del Vallo, Sicily.

“We are proud that our WDM technology is gaining further traction in the Italian market,” said Roberto Loiola, SVP, South and Central Europe at Alcatel-Lucent.

“Our 1830 PSS family has now been adopted by almost every service operator and by a growing number of large enterprises operating in industries where there is a strong need for mission critical networks.”

The project is due to complete in October 2015.
