Virgin Group eyes TeliaSonera’s Yoigo

The UK’s Virgin Group is said to be considering the acquisition of TeliaSonera-owned Spanish mobile operator Yoigo.

According to local reports, Virgin is looking to enter the Spanish telecoms market and has been in contact with Yoigo’s owners over a potential sale.

Negotiations are reportedly being led by Juan Villalonga, former chairman and chief executive at Telefonica and now business advisor to Virgin Mobile Latin America.

TeliaSonera abandoned plans to sell Yoigo in 2013 after failing to attract high enough bids, but late last year, Spain’s Jazztel was reported to be eyeing a Yoigo acquisition.

Activity in the Spanish market has been rife. Britain’s Vodafone – a potential bidder for Yoigo in 2013 – has since acquired Spanish cable firm Ono, and Orange is the process of acquiring Jazztel.

TeliaSonera and Yoigo declined to provide comment on the deal to Reuters.
