KT and Ericsson to collaborate on IoT

South Korea’s KT and Ericsson have agreed to expand their existing collaboration to include the further development of 5G for the evolution of the internet of things (IoT).

Today’s agreement builds on the MoU signed between the two companies in March this year for joint 5G research and last year, the pair successfully verified heterogeneous network carrier aggregation technology, a key element of 5G.

“KT is preparing to preview the world’s first innovative 5G communications services at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics,” said Chang-gyu Hwang, KT CEO.

“Our cooperation with Ericsson will strengthen our strategy to lead 5G and provide seamless connectivity to our customers.”

5G is set to be commercially available from 2020, but Ericsson already has live indoor and outdoor 5G test networks in Sweden and the US.

KT is also set to start 5G indoor and outdoor testing this year in partnership with the Swedish vendor.

“We will take the lead in developing 5G technologies in collaboration with KT,” said Hans Vestberg, president and CEO at Ericsson.

“We will actively cooperate with KT to achieve 5G international standardisation and the successful evolution toward 5G communications.”
