Hibernia Networks reveals milestone for Express deployment

Hibernia Networks has revealed that the physical deployment of its Express cable – the first route to go live in the transatlantic market since Alcatel-Lucent and Vodafone’s Apollo cable in 2003 – has begun.

Speaking exclusively to Capacity, Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO at Hibernia Networks, said that 2,000km of armoured cable has been manufactured and is now being rolled out across the Atlantic.

“The cable has been loaded on board ships and laid out of Brean in the UK and Halifax in the US,” Thorvardarson explained. “Those ships are now on the path to a rendezvous in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.”

The Hibernia Express cable utilises a six fibre pair submarine cable, with a portion of the fibres optimised for lowest latency, and another optimised for 100x100Gbps design capacity.

Thorvardarson said that the Hibernia Express cable has three key features.“One is that it’s brand new and we can offer long-term security and capacity for 25 years,” he said.

“The second one is capacity; we are using the latest technology which has complete upgradability. 100G technology will be there from day one, and it will be much easier to upgrade to 1Tb. And the third one is latency; it is the shortest path in the ocean between London and New York.”

Hibernia Networks’ partner TE SubCom has manufactured more than 4,500km of cable with over 60 amplifiers, each weighing over 500 pounds.

The route is due to go live towards the end of Summer 2015.
