Turkcell CEO targets Ukraine

Turkcell is focussing on regional expansion and may even look at opportunities in Ukraine, Reuters reports.

The company’s new CEO, Kaan Terzioglu, told a news conference this week that the company “will strengthen its international and regional distribution”.

“We will always be looking out for strategic options. You will see a Turkcell that is hungry for investment, and growth-orientated.”

The news conference was Terzioglu’s first public event since his appointment, and he highlighted Ukraine as an area of further investment. Terzioglu claimed Ukraine would require greater mobile infrastructure despite its conflict between pro-Russian separatists.

According to local media, Turkcell is in talks with Ukrainian mobile operator Trimob over a potential acquisition.

Turkcell reported a 61% fall in quarterly profit for Q1 this year, and now appears to be focussing heavily on expansion outside of Turkey.

In February this year, Astelit, MTS and Kyivstar were allocated 15-year 3G mobile licences in Ukraine.
