Tigo launches 4G service in Tanzania

Tigo Tanzania has launched its 4G LTE service in the country, which it claims will be Tanzania's largest and fastest internet network.

The initial launch covers Masaki and Mlimani City areas within Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, with a city-wide roll-out expected to be completed by the end of July 2015. The 4G service will also be rolled out in Arusha, Dodoma, Morogoro, Moshi, Mwanza and Tanga by end-August.

The operator, owned by Millicom, said the technology is approximately five times faster than the 3G technology presently available in the market.

“This once again demonstrates our company’s commitment to the digital lifestyle transformation and its leadership in delivering cutting edge technology and innovation in this market,” said Cecile Tiano, Tigo’s interim general manager.

The launch of the 4G service is part of Tigo’s ongoing plans to improve the quality and coverage of its network. The operator had earlier announced plans to invest $120 million to expand its network for 3G and 4G services in 2015.
