Equinix expands in UK and Canada

Equinix has made two key expansions this week with the launch of its sixth data centre in London, UK – named LD6 – as well as its TR2 data centre in Toronto, Canada.

The LD6 International Business Exchange (IBX), based in Slough, is designed to provide new paths into and out of London, as well as collaboration, innovation and business acceleration opportunities for companies establishing themselves in the city.

Matt Stagg, senior manager of network strategy at UK mobile player EE, said that by 2017, 4G will be predominantly a video distribution network, and he expects a billion gigabytes to go across mobile networks per month.

“Strategically, we need to have a data centre provider, to connect to the top video providers, that understands this growth, and has a roadmap to support it – Equinix meets this need,” Stagg said.

“The launch of LD6 as part of the Equinix London Slough campus brings this roadmap into reality.”

Equinix’s TR2 in Toronto is expected to serve companies doing business in Canada’s largest financial, networking and cloud-computing market.

TR2 has direct access to the Toronto Internet Exchange (TorIX), and already counts Rogers, Telus, Cogeco, Allstream, Cogent, Beanfield and CFN Networks as customers.

“Equinix has played a critical role in driving the growth of TorIX, and the ability to seamlessly interconnect with financial services companies, clouds and global networks has been as essential part of that expansion,” said Bill Sandiford, executive director at TorIX.

“Our company looks forward to tapping new business opportunities as we expand our presence into the Equinix TR2 facility.”

In March 2013, Equinix launched its second IBX data centre in Seattle, US.
