Viettel to acquire Beeline Cambodia

Vietnam’s Viettel is to acquire the complete assets of Beeline Cambodia; the first time that a Vietnamese firm has acquired an active overseas telecoms operator.

The acquisition forms part of Viettel’s wider global expansion plan and includes Beeline’s 2G, 3G and 4G licences.

“Our investment in Beeline Cambodia perfectly aligns with our global vision and growth plan,” said Tao Duc Thang, general director at Viettel Global.

“We are constantly looking for further investment opportunities with telecoms operators in any part of the world and we have set ourselves a target of investing in 20 countries by 2020.”

The deal will cement Viettel as the leading mobile player in Cambodia with a 50% market share, and the operator is also looking to develop infrastructure in the country in preparation for future 4G and 5G services.

“Customers can look forward to enjoying even better quality and coverage, higher speeds, value-added services, and access to 4G services in the near future,” Thang said.

“We will continue to develop the infrastructure and our capabilities in Cambodia to provide users with technologically advanced, affordable and reliable solutions.”

In October last year, Viettel reportedly revealed plans to invest $1 billion in a 3G mobile network in Tanzania
