DE-CIX launches internet exchange in Marseille

DE-CIX is to open an internet exchange at Interxion’s data centre in Marseille, France.

The exchange is due to become operational in the third quarter of this year and aims to serve traffic from Europe to the Middle East and Africa.

Marseille, which is connected by over eight subsea cables and will also be served by the Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1) cable when it goes live in 2016, is emerging as a gateway for traffic between Europe and the Middle East and Africa.

DE-CIX believes that establishing an exchange in Marseille will help the immediate need to address growing volumes of traffic to the Middle East and Africa region, where there is presently limited primary internet content sources.

“In Marseille, we are creating a new neutral internet hub to improve the interconnection of African eyeball networks to regional and global content players,” said Harald Summa, president, DE-CIX.

Interxion completed the acquisition of the SFR Netcenter data centre facilities in Marseille last August.
